The choice for your skin

Hair loss

Hair loss is a common problem that can affect both men and women of all ages. Although it is normal to lose about 50 to 100 hairs daily, excessive hair loss can signal an underlying cause. For many people, losing hair affects not only appearance, but also self-confidence.

What is hair loss?

Hair loss, also known as alopecia, occurs when the hair cycle becomes disrupted. Each hair follicle goes through a cycle of growth, resting and falling out. When the balance in that cycle is disturbed, hair can become thinner or fall out in larger amounts.

One of the most common causes of hair loss is hereditary hair loss, also called Alopecia Androgenetica. Other causes may include vitamin and mineral deficiencies, stress, weight loss, medication, or a medical condition.

Androgenetic alopecia (hereditary hair loss)

This is by far the most common form, in both men and women. It results from a genetic sensitivity to the hormone DHT and leads to progressively thinning hair, often especially on the inlets and top of the head.

Alopecia Areata (patchy hair loss)

Is less common than Alopecia Androgenetica, but is a well-known autoimmune condition in which sudden bald patches appear.

Telogen effluvium (sudden diffuse hair loss)

This form also occurs frequently, especially after stress, illness, pregnancy or another trigger. In this case, the hair falls out temporarily, but usually regrows again.

Traction alopecia

This type of hair loss is caused by prolonged and repeated mechanical stress on the hair. This usually occurs due to certain hairstyles or hair treatments that pull the hair tight.
